The machine, called a Pixation Blade Jet, set a new standard at 7.3 metres wide, with a printable width of 6.5 metres. DPI is 150 with a per square metre hourly print rate of 15 metres, Blade Jet is not the fastest in the world, but boy is it big. The machine is collaboration between its inventor, Dean Anderson of Utah in the USA. Canberra's NCA awarded SCV with a 3 year tender to produce the flags for all countries for the greater Canberra area.
The flags were an unusual size of 4 metres x 2 metres and were produced with a combination of methods. Some of the country emblems and crests were digitally printed and then using the appliquéd method, sewn into the background fabric. "The result is first class" said Richard Nipperess of the NCA. SCV is the first company to demonstrate the ability of combined methods for such a project.

SCV first printed onto fabric digitally in 1990 in a small back room in Leichhardt. The image was printed onto fabric by one of the very first generation Mutoh printers with the help of Daniel O'Hana of Fenwick Signs.
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 1\2 Sq\P\H DPI - 100 Width - 900 mm Heads - 4 CMYK |
|
We bought a Mutoh and also a Mimaki testing inks and fabrics fro 3 years, before commercially offering the images for sale in late 1994. Speeds had improved to;
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 3 Sq\P\H DPI - 200 Width - 1000 mm Heads - 4 CMYK |
|
By 1996, the technology jumped forward again and SCV went on to install and run the first Raster Graphics electrostatic Dye Sub machines in Australia in 1996. These two machines required a sealed room, rubber gloves, white Doctor's coats and a total environmentally protected room. A few degrees in temperature difference would result in a different colour, even though printed on the same machine within 15 minutes. The speed jumped to;
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 15 Sq\P\H DPI - 320 Width - 1320 mm Heads - 4 CMYK + 1 spot |
|
In 1998 we acquired the first and still the only Colourspan Fabrijet in the South Pacific. This machine proved vital in our sampling of images to clients, but never really took off as a commercial printer.
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 16 Sq\P\H DPI - 600 Width - 1800 mm Heads - 12 CMYK |
|
In 2000 we purchased the new generation of Mutoh digital ink printers. It provided many months worth of challenges and when finally working, the output and image quality was unbelievable.
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 10 Sq\P\H DPI - 360,720,1440 Width - 1800 mm Heads - 12 CMYK |
|
We've since acquired our Giant format Pixation Bladejet;
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 15 Sq\P\H DPI - 150 Width - 6500 mm Heads - 4 CMYK |
|
Very soon, in September 2004 we will bring on line our newest offing. This exciting new digital ink printer we believe will lead the revolution. The machine is a hybrid of Aussie, Polish, Japanese and Italian design. It brings together the colour and UV stability required by Australian conditions, ink from qualified Greenpeace and European standards, with the techno wizbang of the Japanese and Ferrari like speed of the Italian's. |
|
The machine will print onto both sides of the fabric simultaneously and not only Polyester fabrics, but natural yarns as well. "Once the R & D is complete, we may find our factory full of these little beauties", said General Manager Greg Lambert. |
|
Specs for the machine:
Speed - 25 Sq\P\H DPI - 360,720,1440 Width - 2200 mm Heads - 12 CMYK |
|
"Our screen printing will be around for a little while yet, but the revolution is nigh" |
